February, 2014, Annual Duck Banding and Greenwing, Ballard County Ducks Unlimited Chapter, Held Annually at the Ballard Wildlife Management Area for a Greenwing member who is someone age 17 or younger. Greenwings received a Ballard County Greenwings T-shirt, were able to participate in outdoors events supervised by volunteers with hamburgers and hot dogs served at the end of the event.

April 12-16, 2014  “Riverboat Series” Run/Walk Through KY-TN-AR-MS-LA  - USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event starting at Columbus-Belmont State Park, 5 Days – 5 States – Marathons/Half-Marathons. Start Times: 7 am every day.  This will be at first light and, as a result, there will be no early starts.  No dogs to accompany runners.  Each participant will receive a separate medal for each day, one cotton t-shirt, and other good stuff. Special medals to those who complete all five. COURSE: two loops totaling 2.184 miles, south loop (1.445 miles) is paved with views of the Mississippi River, north loop on dirt and grass through Civil War Earthworks. April 19, 2014, 9:00 a.m., Civil War Trust Park Clean Up Day, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, History Buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with Civil War Trust, to help clean and restore America’s priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines.  The nationwide effort –dubbed Park Day – is underwritten with a grant from History Channel and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. Over 100 sites in 25 states are expected to take part in the effort with activities ranging from trash removal to trail building or planting flowers.  In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts, lunch, and a museum tour. April 26, 2014 9:30am-1:00pm, Natural Environment Day at Wickliffe Mounds, In celebration of Earth Day, Wickliffe Mounds will have a tree planting event beginning at9:30 a.m. Volunteers for planting trees will meet in the WelcomeCenter to get an overview of the project plans.  Trees native to this region will be planted in areas of the park grounds that are not part of the archaeological deposits in order to maintain the protection of the site.  An interpretive program about the Natural Environment of the Mississippian culture and the Woods Walk trail will be conducted after the tree planting.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, orange safety vest, and a sack lunch. Trees from this project are part of the Odwalla Plant a Tree program through a partnership with Kentucky Division of Forestry.

May 17-18, 2014/ 9:am-5:pm – Bow Building Workshop at Wickliffe Mounds, Participants will have expert instruction on building an Eastern woodlands style long bow out of hickory staves.  Tools and supplies will be provided, but you may bring your own hand tools to use for constructing the bow if you prefer. This is a two-day workshop and overnight camping is available.  Participants must bring your own tent and camping gear. This class is limited and advance reservation is required. Workshop fee:  $100 (includes campout). May 24, 2014  Ballard County Wheels and Wings, 4th Annual bicycle tour starting at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter, KY, Rain or shine!, Choice of 15-, 30- and 60-mile routes. Routes: The tour starts at Ballard County Preschool in LaCenter. The 30-mile route goes through Oscar, Monkey’s Eyebrow, Bandana and back to LaCenter. The 60-mile route goes south of U.S. 60 and west to Wickliffe, before turning north to Barlow, farther north to Monkey’s Eyebrow, then going on into McCracken County to the Heath area before returning to Bandana/LaCenter. There are wide expanses of almost-empty state roads bordered by green fields and pastures, small lakes, and some of the largest cypress tree stands in Western Kentucky. With luck, you might even see one of our bald eagles! The 15- and 30-mile routes are mostly flat. Even beginners can complete them. The 60-mile route is more challenging, with a series of rolling hills in the first 20 miles. Lines of sight are long, and traffic is light on all routes.  Family-friendly! Children 12 and under ride for free with a registered adult. Required: All riders must wear helmets and obey traffic laws. Start and finish at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter. Registration will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday. May 31, 2014, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, Seymour Bluffs at Wickliffe Mounds, Meet at the Welcome Center for a presentation from children’s author Phyllis Bechtold who writes a book series about an American Bald Eagle named Seymour Bluffs. In her book, Seymour Bluffs and the Legend of the Piasa Bird, Seymour travels back in time to an Illini Indian village located along the Mississippi river and helps them with a problem from the mysterious Piasa bird.  A life-size Seymour Bluffs will be on hand to help Ms. Bechtold personally autograph the books for sale. This is a wonderful book program for children of all ages. The event is free inside the center.

June 7, 2014, 9:00 a.m. National Trails Day – Take a History Hike, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is a celebration of America’s magnificent Trail System, occurring annually on the first Saturday in June.  NTD features a series of outdoor activities designed to promote and celebrate the importance of trails in the United States.  Individuals, clubs, and organizations from around the country host National Trails Day events to share their love of trails with friends, family and their communities.  Columbus-Belmont State Park has 2.5 miles of hiking trails that lead through woods and nature area and historic earthworks from the Civil War.  For more information call 270-677-2327 or email cindy.lynch@ky.gov

Friday is “education day”.  Schools, scouts, groups, & clubs are encouraged to schedule field trips.  Battles will be held at 2:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday featuring skilled re-enactors bringing history back to life.  Battle narration and music by Rick Revel. There will be a Ghost Walk on Friday evening through the historic earthworks and a Civil War Ball on Saturday night featuring The 52nd Regimental String Band. Sunday morning services led in period style by Rev. Alan Farley followed by a memorial ceremony at Columbus Cemetery.
