Raffles - 2014 HICKMAN PECAN FESTIVAL 

The Hickman Recreation and Tourist Commission selling RAFFLE TICKETS as a Pecan Festival fundraiser.  On Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Jeff Green Memorial Park, a drawing will be held for a 50-inch flat screen television (great to watch the World Series, Kentucky basketball, and all of your favorite shows), two tickets to see the St. Louis Cardinals play the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium (which includes a $50 gasoline card) and other prizes….tickets are $1 each and can be obtained from Mike Hartigan, James Adams, Roger Adams, Jill Coffey, Denise Grissom, Justin Suttles, Phillip Williams or Charles Choate. Do not have to be present at the festival, to be to win….but we sure want you to attend the 21st Anniversary of the Hickman Pecan Festival.

Saturday, September 6th : “Community Wide Yard Sale” – 7:00am Get out your tables, clean out the closets and set up a Pecan Festival yard sale at your home or business. Many people will travel the streets of Hickman looking for those special deals. Tell us in advance and we will post on our Facebook page! Yard Sale Starts at 7:00

 

Saturday, September 6th : “River Rat Race – 5-K Run and Fun Walk” – 7:30am The Hickman Rotary Club is sponsoring the 10th annual event, which will start at the Fulton County Courthouse and end at the Fulton County High School. Entry fee is $15 in advance, $20 the day of the race,with the first 50 applicants receiving a free race t-shirt. Entry can be made at Porter Insurance or on race day. September 8th - Veterans Monument – City Cemetery – 9:00am “Pecan Festival Prayer and Veterans Ceremony” Community members are encouraged to come to the Veterans Monument, at Hickman City Cemetery, for a moment of prayer for the Festival, City, schools and military. A ceremony will also be held in honor of all who have served, or continue to serve, in the different branches of Armed Forces. Sgt. First Class Chris Cummings, a 25 year veteran who served two tours in Iraq, will serve as the special guest speaker.

 

Monday, September 8th “Fun at the Bluff” - Hickman Bluff – Public Library – 6:00pm Come to a beautiful location in the City of Hickman, as we join for an afternoon and evening of activities. Starting at 6:00, “Mickey Mouse” “Raphael the Ninja Turtle” and “Scooby Doo” will make an appearance, where they will meet with all children. All children will also be given the opportunity to view fire trucks and police cars. Music will be provided by Barry Patrick and his daughter Dione Wilson. A cake walk, egg drop, bb-gun shoot and bar-b-que chicken plates from the grill will also be part of the opening nights activities. Bring your lawn chairs and get ready for fun. You do not want to miss this!!!

 

Tuesday, September 9, 2014 – 4:30pm The Sacred Heart Catholic Church will host the Pecan Festival “Supper and Bingo Night” on Tuesday, September 9th…..hamburgers and hot dogs will be sold starting at 4:30, with bingo games starting at 6:00….this is always a fun night at the Pecan Festival…tell your friends and neighbors and come out for a big time at the church fellowship hall.

 

Saturday, September 13, 2014, 10:am,  Scavenger Hunt at Jeff Green Memorial Park for the Pecan Festival….with nice prizes for winning…..we thank the Fulton County Extension Service for holding this event and setting up a booth Saturday, September 13, 2014 Here is the scheduled line-up of entertainment for the Hickman Pecan Festival day at Jeff Green Memorial Park….all times are subject to change before the event.

Country music performers T. Graham Brown and Georgette Jones will headline the 2014 Pecan Festival this year at Jeff Green Memorial Park…..Brown is on a nationwide tour to promote the release of his new album “Forever Changed”…he has recorded 14 studio albums and has over 20 charted hits, which includes the No.1 songs “Darlene”, Hell and High Water” and “Don’t Go to Strangers”….Georgette is the daughter of the late country music stars George Jones and Tammy Wynette…she has recorded two studio albums and performed with her dad on albums and at the Grand Ole Opry, while also serving as a back-up singer during her mother’s concerts….both will meet and greet with festival goers at the park following their shows. Additional performers will perform at Jeff Green Memorial Park for the Hickman Pecan Festival. A great day of music with a variety of sounds.

February, 2014, Annual Duck Banding and Greenwing, Ballard County Ducks Unlimited Chapter, Held Annually at the Ballard Wildlife Management Area for a Greenwing member who is someone age 17 or younger. Greenwings received a Ballard County Greenwings T-shirt, were able to participate in outdoors events supervised by volunteers with hamburgers and hot dogs served at the end of the event.

April 12-16, 2014  “Riverboat Series” Run/Walk Through KY-TN-AR-MS-LA  - USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event starting at Columbus-Belmont State Park, 5 Days – 5 States – Marathons/Half-Marathons. Start Times: 7 am every day.  This will be at first light and, as a result, there will be no early starts.  No dogs to accompany runners.  Each participant will receive a separate medal for each day, one cotton t-shirt, and other good stuff. Special medals to those who complete all five. April 19, 2014, 9:00 a.m., Civil War Trust Park Clean Up Day, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, History Buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with Civil War Trust, to help clean and restore America’s priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines.  The nationwide effort –dubbed Park Day – is underwritten with a grant from History Channel and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. Over 100 sites in 25 states are expected to take part in the effort with activities ranging from trash removal to trail building or planting flowers.  In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts, lunch, and a museum tour. April 26, 2014 9:30am-1:00pm, Natural Environment Day at Wickliffe Mounds, In celebration of Earth Day, Wickliffe Mounds will have a tree planting event beginning at9:30 a.m. Volunteers for planting trees will meet in the WelcomeCenter to get an overview of the project plans.  Trees native to this region will be planted in areas of the park grounds that are not part of the archaeological deposits in order to maintain the protection of the site.  An interpretive program about the Natural Environment of the Mississippian culture and the Woods Walk trail will be conducted after the tree planting.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, orange safety vest, and a sack lunch. Trees from this project are part of the Odwalla Plant a Tree program through a partnership with Kentucky Division of Forestry.

May 24, 2014  Ballard County Wheels and Wings, 4th Annual bicycle tour starting at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter, KY, Rain or shine!, Choice of 15-, 30- and 60-mile routes. Routes: The tour starts at Ballard County Preschool in LaCenter. The 30-mile route goes through Oscar, Monkey’s Eyebrow, Bandana and back to LaCenter. The 60-mile route goes south of U.S. 60 and west to Wickliffe, before turning north to Barlow, farther north to Monkey’s Eyebrow, then going on into McCracken County to the Heath area before returning to Bandana/LaCenter. There are wide expanses of almost-empty state roads bordered by green fields and pastures, small lakes, and some of the largest cypress tree stands in Western Kentucky. With luck, you might even see one of our bald eagles! The 15- and 30-mile routes are mostly flat. Even beginners can complete them. The 60-mile route is more challenging, with a series of rolling hills in the first 20 miles. Lines of sight are long, and traffic is light on all routes.  Family-friendly! Children 12 and under ride for free with a registered adult. Required: All riders must wear helmets and obey traffic laws. Start and finish at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter. Registration will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday. May 31, 2014, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, Seymour Bluffs at Wickliffe Mounds, Meet at the Welcome Center for a presentation from children’s author Phyllis Bechtold who writes a book series about an American Bald Eagle named Seymour Bluffs. In her book, Seymour Bluffs and the Legend of the Piasa Bird, Seymour travels back in time to an Illini Indian village located along the Mississippi river and helps them with a problem from the mysterious Piasa bird.  A life-size Seymour Bluffs will be on hand to help Ms. Bechtold personally autograph the books for sale. This is a wonderful book program for children of all ages. The event is free inside the center.

Wickliffe Harvest Festival

The tradition of the annual Wickliffe Harvest Festival continues, but with a lot more events and for a great cause. The dates are different than in previous years, it will be held September 11th proceeds from this year’s festival are being deposited into a Parks and Recreation fund to help pay for Wickliffe City Park beautification, updates, and hopefully new playground equipment. These funds will also help the festival continue with bigger and better events.

 

This year features amusement park rides from Playland Amusements will arrive on the afternoon of Thursday September 11th.  Playland will also have the favorite carnival foods: corn dogs, funnel cakes, etc. Tickets or armbands will be available for purchase in the park. Rides will be available from Thursday until Saturday night.

 

The usual (and new) food and craft vendors will begin setting up on Thursday and Friday.

 

BMHS Band Boosters will feature corn-hole games starting Friday night, giving winners a chance at a gift card Friday afternoon “The Petting Place” petting zoo will be set up with $2.00 admission price, $1.00 to feed the animals, and $4.00 for pony rides. They will also have lots of toys and goodies to purchase for your children.

 

The Wickliffe Harvest Festival officially kicks off at 5:30 pm on Friday night beginning with the KVPM Veteran and Patriot Salute and the announcement of the 2014 Grand Marshal.

 

BINGO sponsored by The Ballard County Weekly will also begin at 5:30 pm and continue until the players stop.

 

Immediately following at approximately 6:00 pm, the annual Variety Show “That’s Entertainment” will begin. Sit back and enjoy 90 minutes of local talent with their  – 13th. All song, dance, and comedy.

 

Live music by Country Music Talent Keith Murray will begin at 7:30 pm and will close out Friday night’s events. Keith grew up in Atwood, Tennessee, a small town about half way between Memphis and Nashville, He played in local bands in Western Tennessee as well as the Western portion of Kentucky while growing up.  Keith made the move to Nashville in 2000 after driving back and forth for 3 years playing writer’s nights at venues such as the Bluebird Cafe and Douglas Corner. This year we are introducing our first annual “Firin’ Up The Flats” barbeque competition. Teams will fire up their pits Friday night, and kick off the competition with the fun categories of Anything Butt and dessert. These categories are open to the public, (and can be cooked off site) so you don’t have to have a team name or be entered in the meat categories to enter your momma’s famous family recipe for a chance at bragging rights and winner take all prize money! Saturday the pit battle gets serious. A large panel of judges instructed by certified BBQ representatives will enter the park with their plates ready to judge in the meat categories of ribs, chicken, and pork. Prize money, trophies, plaques, and certificates will be awarded to Grand Champion, Reserve Gran Champion, and in each meat category. There will be over $3,000 in prize money awarded along with trophies, plaques, and certificates! This is one event you BBQ enthusiasts don’t want to miss. Teams are allowed to sell their BBQ, so if you are a spectator you will want to grab yourself a taste of that which has been kissed by smoke, hugged by sauce, and licked by fire! Saturday events begin with another first, the Harvest Festival 5K & 1-Mile walk/run. The entry fees will be $15.00 for the 5K run/walk and $10.00 for the 1-mile youth run and walk. Race day registration is from 7:00 – 7:30 am. The youth run will begin at 7:30 am and the 5K will begin at 8:00 am. Walkers will begin shortly after the 5K begins. The course will begin at the Wickliffe Park, go down Beech Grove Rd., and return to the park. Registration forms are available at Wickliffe City Hall. The parade will take place at 9:00 am Saturday morning. Sign-ups for participants begin at 8:30 am at City Hall (321 Court Street). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to enter. Trophies for categories and a Grand Prize trophy are awarded. Stick around after the parade and enjoy a stroll through the town in the beautiful horse and carriage.

 

Carriage rides will be $5.00 and will be available until approximately 3:00 pm. Big thanks to First Community Bank and Citizens Deposit Bank for helping sponsor the carriage rides.

 

BINGO will be starting back up at 11:00 am.

 

Harvest Festival pageants begin at 11:00 am. Pageants will be held on the Main Stage and are for age’s newborn to eight years. Entry forms with age divisions and information will be available at Wickliffe, Barlow, LaCenter, and Kevil post offices along with Wickliffe City hall. There is a $10 entry fee. Forms may be returned to Wickliffe City Hall with payment or mailed to PO Box 175 Wickliffe, KY 42087. You may also register the day of the pageants from 10:00 am to 11:00 am by the stage.BBQ pits are not the only thing that will be “firin’ up the flats” this year.

 

Motorcycle enthusiasts from the surrounding area will be meeting in the Wickliffe City Park (on Beech Grove Rd. to the left of the basketball courts) on Saturday for the Harvest Festival Poker Run. Riders can pre-register at Wickliffe City Hall and get a chance in the drawing for those who pre-register only. Registration the day of the ride will begin at 9:00 am. First bike out will be 11:00 am and last bike in will be 2:00 pm. Riders will hit the Scenic Great River Road for over a 100 mile run with stops along the way in hopes to be the winner of the best hand possible. Prizes will also be awarded for the second best hand and worst hand. There is a $10 entry fee and includes a BBQ lunch meal. There will be door prize drawings, live music, and a 50/50 raffle.

 

All trucks and cars are welcome to enter and purchase a hand and play along. When you return to the park, check out the vintage motorcycles, old hot rod cars and trucks that will be on display. For more information contact Phillip Powell at (270) 832-7224.

 

The Youth Talent Show will once again begin the evening’s entertainment on Saturday at 5:00 pm. There will be a Junior Division for ages 12 and under and a Senior Division for ages 13-21. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in both divisions. This talent show is a sanctioned preliminary for the Mid-South Fair Talent Show in South Haven, MS. The winner of the Senior Division will automatically advance to the Mid-South Fair Youth Talent Show. Deadline for entries will be September 8.  “Those Guys,” a local band with a wide genre of music, will take the stage around 7:00 pm and close out Saturday night’s events.  Be sure to come out each night and enjoy the performances that will be sure to get you up on your feet!

 

Vendors are still being accepted, but spaces are limited. The cost is $30 for a 10 x 10 area and you may choose to set up all or any days of the festival. Spaces will be pre-assigned and only vendors who have signed up and paid prior to the festival will be allowed to set up. Applications may be picked up at City Hall, or can be emailed.  Harvest Festival t-shirts designed by Unlimited Graphics will be for sale during the festival at the City of Wickliffe tent at the park, and preorders will also be taken. Big thanks to the local businesses who bought ad spaces on the back of our shirt!
