Routes: The tour starts at Ballard County Preschool in LaCenter. The 30-mile route goes through Oscar, Monkey’s Eyebrow, Bandana and back to LaCenter. The 60-mile route is more challenging, with a series of rolling hills in the first 20 miles. Lines of sight are long, and traffic is light on all routes.  Family-friendly! May 23, 2015, Special Presentation at Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site by archaeologist, Frank M. Bodkin. At 1:00 in the Welcome Center, Mr. Bodkin will present, “The Wickliffe Mounds Birdman: A Mythical Thunderbird Impersonator”. His discussion will consider a noteworthy copper artifact found with a burial from the 1930s excavation, its symbolism associated with the widespread mythology in Eastern North America of “Thunderers”, (birdmen or Thunderbird) who were part human and part bird. Mr. Bodkin proposes that the close connection to Cahokia and the abundant bird symbolism found at the Wickliffe Mounds archaeological site warrants the suggestion that Wickliffe was a contemporary religious and commercial outpost of the Cahokia region. For more information about the program, please call the park office at 270-335-3681.
