Apr 10-16, 2017 (Ky on Apr 14th)  “Riverboat Series” at Columbus-Belmont State Park, Run/Walk Through LA-AR-MS-TN-KY-MO-IL. USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event starting at Columbus-Belmont State Park, 7 Days – 7 States – Marathons/Half-Marathons. Start Times: 7 am every day. This will be at first light and, as a result, there will be no early starts. No dogs to accompany runners.  Each participant will receive a separate medal for each day, one cotton t-shirt, and other good stuff. Special medals to those who complete all five. COURSE: two loops totaling 2.184 miles, south loop (1.445 miles) is paved with views of the Mississippi River, north loop on dirt and grass through Civil War Earthworks. Apr 15, 2017 – Annual Easter Egg Hunt on ATVS at Wrights Area 252 Riding Park

Apr 15, 2017,  9:00 a.m.-12: noon, Civil War Trust Park Clean Up Day, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, History Buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with Civil War Trust, to help clean and restore America’s priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines.  The nationwide effort –dubbed Park Day – is underwritten with a grant from History Channel and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. Over 100 sites in 25 states are expected to take part in the effort with activities ranging from trash removal to trail building or planting flowers.  In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts, lite lunch, and learn the site’s history from local experts.  At Columbus-Belmont State Park volunteers are needed to PLANT FLOWERS, PICK UP STICKS, LIMBS, TRASH, and WORK IN TRAILS.  Bring gloves, rakes, and brooms.Call park office for more information 270-677-2327 or email cindy.lynch@ky.gov

May 17, 2017  Ballard County Wheels and Wings, 6th Annual bicycle tour starting at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter, KY, Rain or shine!, Choice of 15-, 30- and 60-mile routes. Routes: The tour starts at Ballard County Preschool in LaCenter. The 30-mile route goes through Oscar, Monkey’s Eyebrow, Bandana and back to LaCenter. The 60-mile route goes south of U.S. 60 and west to Wickliffe, before turning north to Barlow, farther north to Monkey’s Eyebrow, then going on into McCracken County to the Heath area before returning to Bandana/LaCenter. There are wide expanses of almost-empty state roads bordered by green fields and pastures, small lakes, and some of the largest cypress tree stands in Western Kentucky. With luck, you might even see one of our bald eagles! The 15- and 30-mile routes are mostly flat. Even beginners can complete them. The 60-mile route is more challenging, with a series of rolling hills in the first 20 miles. Lines of sight are long, and traffic is light on all routes.  Family-friendly! Children 12 and under ride for free with a registered adult. Required: All riders must wear helmets and obey traffic laws. Start and finish at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter. June 10, 2017, KNAP-IN AT WICKLIFFE MOUNDS, Saturday, 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. Flint-knapping is the art of shaping stone into useful tools such as spear points, arrowheads, and flint knives, a very useful skill for prehistoric people. Flint-knapping specialist, Fred “Arrowhead” Bollinger, and fellow knapper friends, will be creating stone tools and sharing their knowledge of the lithic craft with park visitors. Come out to the park and watch all day, learning the art and craft of flint-knapping. Knappers must be registered prior to the event to participate. June 10-17, 2017 (14-16th in Hickman, KY), Ride the Fault Line Bicycling Touring arriving for two nights in Hickman, KY. Seven day supported bike tour through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Registration begins in December 2013www.ridethefault.com; A ride through the heart of the central United States, visiting portions of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Cross the mighty Mississippi River on one of the last remaining riverboat ferries. Experience the history and see landforms created by the Great New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812. Tour a Civil War era mansion and museum, visit a restored early 1900’s one-room schoolhouse and the residence/studio where Ernest Hemingway wrote “A Farewell to Arms”. Average 60 miles a day riding on some of the flattest terrain anywhere! And for those cyclists for whom no ride is complete without some elevation gains, there will be optional hilly routes offered. September 23, 2017, NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY AT WICKLIFFE MOUNDS, National Public Lands Day will be recognized with park volunteers cleaning the park grounds, ensuring that the trails and grounds are preserved for everyone to enjoy. Work begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 noon. Bring your own gloves, hats, bug repellent and sunscreen. All tools, safety equipment and bottled water will be issued by the park. In addition, free admission will be offered to everyone as a way of saying thank you to the community for their support. Friday is “education day”.  Schools, scouts, groups, & clubs are encouraged to schedule field trips.  Battles will be held at 2:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday featuring skilled re-enactors bringing history back to life.  Battle narration and music. There will be a Ghost Walk on Friday evening through the historic earthworks and a Civil War Ball on Saturday night featuring The 52nd Regimental String Band. Sunday morning services led in period style by Rev. Alan Farley followed by a memorial ceremony at Columbus Cemetery.  Ky Great River Road Trails ATV Trails

Currently there are only two permissible locations to ride ATVs in the KY Great River Road Trails found in Carlisle County along the Mississippi River. 

Found only on the permissible road in Carlisle County as listed below or at the Wright’s Area 252 Riding Park. 


1. Carlisle County River Trails – ATV Rules

With a Permit, atv’s may ride only on the permissible roads listed.  Permissible County Roads include only these listed, otherwise subject to fine or arrest if found outside of ATV Road System:

WARNING….You are responsible for your own safety. Trail use has inherent risks and you may encounter a variety of unexpected and/or dangerous conditions. It is your responsibility to be informed and take precautions. Trail conditions are subject to change without notice.

1.      RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK. KNOW YOUR LIMITS.

2.      Carlisle County River Trail riders should follow safety practices recommended by the AMA ASI, including wearing heavy shoes, protective clothing, shatterproof eyewear, and helmets.

3.      Use caution while unloading and while riding on or near designated parking areas.

4.      Parking strictly prohibited anywhere except designated parking areas.

5.      Trails are two-way traffic. For safety, drive with headlights on.

6.      Hunting and other activities also occur in the Carlisle County River Bottoms. Be aware and courteous to other users on and off the trail at all times.

7.      All users under 21 years of age are required to wear DOT-approved motorcycle safety helmets while vehicles are in operation, except in vehicles with a fully enclosed metal cab or roll bar protection and seatbelts.

8.      Mud bogging and the creation of new trails is strictly prohibited.

9.      STAY ON DESIGNATED TRAILS; IF A TRAIL IS NOT SIGNED IT IS NOT A LEGAL TRAIL, subject to fines. 

10.  All riders must sign a waiver of liability and receive a map of the River Trails.

11.  Anyone under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature to ride.

12.  Direct parental or adult supervision is required for all persons under the age of 18 years’ operating on the River Trails.

13.  Litter laws are strictly enforced throughout the River Trails System.

14.  ALL KENTUCKY STATE LAWS SUPERSEDE these rules as if incorporated herein.

Rules and safety laws are now in effect for operating ATVs and side by sides on lands to public use. All users must adhere to the laws of the commonwealth of Kentucky, including local and federal.

RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK. KNOW YOUR LIMITS

  1. Failure to follow rules and safe operation guidelines may result in arrests, fines, and/or temporary or permanent ban from Area 252.
  2. The terrain is constantly changing. Ride all trails with CAUTION. When at all possible the uphill rider shall be give the “right of way”. DO NOT BLOCK any trail at any time, except during emergencies. Non operative vehicles should be moved to the side of the trails and attended to immediately.
  3. No trail blazing. Stay on designated trails and obey all signs. Do not enter areas marked as Private Property. Do not damage crops on AREA 252.
  4. Racing, excessive speed, and reckless driving are all strictly prohibited. Be considerate of other riders at all times.
  5. Mud bogging is only allowed on Trail #13 in the designated area.
  6. Litter laws are enforced!!! If you pack it in, pack it out.
  7. No firearms, concealed weapons, or explosives of any kind are allowed on premises.
  8. The removal of any plants, rocks, trees, wildlife, or otherwise is prohibited.
  9. No glass bottles or containers. Alcohol is prohibited.
  10. Camp fires are only allowed in designated areas. No large fires-only downed wood/dead wood may be used for small camp fires. Leave no fires burning or smoldering. Always make sure fire is completely extinguished before leaving.
  11. AREA 252 or any person or entity associated with it, is neither liable nor responsible for damage, loss, or theft of personal property or injury. All decisions by management are final.
  12. A person under the age of sixteen (16) years shall not operate an all-terrain vehicle with an engine size exceeding ninety (90) cubic centimeters displacement, and a person under the age of 16 shall not operate an all-terrain vehicle except under direct parental supervision. A person under the age of sixteen (16) years, when operating or riding as a passenger on an all-terrain vehicle, shall wear DOT approved protective headgear.
  13. A person under the age of twelve (12) years shall not operate an all-terrain vehicle with an engine size exceeding seventy (70) cubic centimeters displacement.

Currently 12 sites available (4 with electricity at $20.00 per night, 8 sites w/out hookups at $10.00 per night) – lots of rooms for tents, horse trailers and campers, horses, and 4-wheel riders.  Experience the Mississippi River Trails of Kentucky, connecting with Carlisle County River Trails for awesome views of the Mississippi River.

The campground has 38 sites with utility hookups and grills. A central service building offers rest rooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Pets are allowed if restrained. Campground open year round, water available, but not to each site in winter.
