February, 2014, Annual Duck Banding and Greenwing, Ballard County Ducks Unlimited Chapter, Held Annually at the Ballard Wildlife Management Area for a Greenwing member who is someone age 17 or younger. Greenwings received a Ballard County Greenwings T-shirt, were able to participate in outdoors events supervised by volunteers with hamburgers and hot dogs served at the end of the event.

April 12-16, 2014  “Riverboat Series” Run/Walk Through KY-TN-AR-MS-LA  - USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event starting at Columbus-Belmont State Park, 5 Days – 5 States – Marathons/Half-Marathons. Start Times: 7 am every day.  This will be at first light and, as a result, there will be no early starts.  No dogs to accompany runners.  Each participant will receive a separate medal for each day, one cotton t-shirt, and other good stuff. Special medals to those who complete all five. COURSE: two loops totaling 2.184 miles, south loop (1.445 miles) is paved with views of the Mississippi River, north loop on dirt and grass through Civil War Earthworks. April 19, 2014, 9:00 a.m., Civil War Trust Park Clean Up Day, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, History Buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with Civil War Trust, to help clean and restore America’s priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines.  The nationwide effort –dubbed Park Day – is underwritten with a grant from History Channel and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. Over 100 sites in 25 states are expected to take part in the effort with activities ranging from trash removal to trail building or planting flowers.  In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts, lunch, and a museum tour. April 26, 2014 9:30am-1:00pm, Natural Environment Day at Wickliffe Mounds, In celebration of Earth Day, Wickliffe Mounds will have a tree planting event beginning at9:30 a.m. Volunteers for planting trees will meet in the WelcomeCenter to get an overview of the project plans.  Trees native to this region will be planted in areas of the park grounds that are not part of the archaeological deposits in order to maintain the protection of the site.  An interpretive program about the Natural Environment of the Mississippian culture and the Woods Walk trail will be conducted after the tree planting.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, orange safety vest, and a sack lunch. Trees from this project are part of the Odwalla Plant a Tree program through a partnership with Kentucky Division of Forestry.

May 24, 2014  Ballard County Wheels and Wings, 4th Annual bicycle tour starting at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter, KY, Rain or shine!, Choice of 15-, 30- and 60-mile routes. Routes: The tour starts at Ballard County Preschool in LaCenter. The 30-mile route goes through Oscar, Monkey’s Eyebrow, Bandana and back to LaCenter. The 60-mile route goes south of U.S. 60 and west to Wickliffe, before turning north to Barlow, farther north to Monkey’s Eyebrow, then going on into McCracken County to the Heath area before returning to Bandana/LaCenter. There are wide expanses of almost-empty state roads bordered by green fields and pastures, small lakes, and some of the largest cypress tree stands in Western Kentucky. With luck, you might even see one of our bald eagles! The 15- and 30-mile routes are mostly flat. Even beginners can complete them. The 60-mile route is more challenging, with a series of rolling hills in the first 20 miles. Lines of sight are long, and traffic is light on all routes.  Family-friendly! Children 12 and under ride for free with a registered adult. Required: All riders must wear helmets and obey traffic laws. Start and finish at Ballard County Preschool, 455 Olive St., LaCenter. Registration will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday. May 31, 2014, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, Seymour Bluffs at Wickliffe Mounds, Meet at the Welcome Center for a presentation from children’s author Phyllis Bechtold who writes a book series about an American Bald Eagle named Seymour Bluffs. In her book, Seymour Bluffs and the Legend of the Piasa Bird, Seymour travels back in time to an Illini Indian village located along the Mississippi river and helps them with a problem from the mysterious Piasa bird.  A life-size Seymour Bluffs will be on hand to help Ms. Bechtold personally autograph the books for sale. This is a wonderful book program for children of all ages. The event is free inside the center.

June 7, 2014, 9:am-3:pm National Trails Day – Take a History Hike, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is a celebration of America’s magnificent Trail System, occurring annually on the first Saturday in June.  NTD features a series of outdoor activities designed to promote and celebrate the importance of trails in the United States.  Individuals, clubs, and organizations from around the country host National Trails Day events to share their love of trails with friends, family and their communities.  Columbus-Belmont State Park has 2.5 miles of hiking trails that lead through woods and nature area and historic earthworks from the Civil War.  For more information call 270-677-2327 or email cindy.lynch@ky.gov

There will be a Ghost Walk on Friday evening and a Civil War Ball on Saturday night. Sunday morning services and a memorial ceremony at Columbus Cemetery.   Sutlers and food vendors will be on site to serve the needs of the re-enactors and visiting guests.  Cavalry and artillery by invitation, all infantry welcome. Straw, wood, powder ration, and a meal will be provided to re-enactors.  There is no registration fee or admission charge. The event is sponsored by Columbus-Belmont State Park, Hickman County Judge Executive/Fiscal Court and Civil War Days Committee. Notice… Solo rider cost is $15. Add $5 for each passenger. If you have a 4 seat side by side (and all seats are full) the cost would be $30. Each person must execute a waiver of liability before hitting the trails. A complete list of rules and a map of the trails will be provided to you upon arrival.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Discover over 12 miles of trails stretched across a 252 acre farm. We are located along the banks of the Mississippi River Trails of KY near in Burkley, KY – between Bardwell and Columbus-Belmont State Park.  The trails range in skill level from beginners to extreme riders, including a mud pit! There is much to explore throughout our hills and valleys!

A Trailhead facility currently under construction! We will have many products available for purchase like drinks, food, and don’t forget the ice. Other products available will include, sunglasses, googles, tow ropes, and souvenirs, and much more for your riding needs!

You are responsible for your own safety. Trail use has inherent risks with a variety of unexpected and/or dangerous conditions. It is your responsibility to be informed and take precautions. Trail conditions are subject to change without notice. RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK. KNOW YOUR LIMITS. All users must adhere to local, state, and federal laws.

All users of the recreational area are required annually to execute a waiver of liability and purchase a permit to enter Wright’s Area 252 Riding Park. Failure to follow rules and safe operation guidelines may result in arrest, fines, temporary or permanent ban from AREA 252.  Helmets are required per KRS Law 189.515. Protective gear recommended by the ATV Safety Institute is strongly recommended, as are all product recommendations specific to your vehicle. All off road vehicle drivers and riders should follow the manufacture’s safe operating procedures.  Each vehicle entering the AREA 252 must display a permit sticker in highly visible location on ATV.

AREA 252 Permits are not the same as Carlisle County River Trail Permits. Permits may be purchased at local retail outlets or call the Office of the Carlisle County Judge-Executive to obtain current listing of locations. Permit user must provide valid drivers license with picture identification. No unauthorized or non-permitted vehicles allowed in AREA 252.  No users under the age of 18 allowed in AREA 252 without written permission from parent or legal guardian. A parent or legal guardian must sign a liability waiver in the presence of AREA 252 staff. Adult must accompany Minors 16 and under at all times.

No Drugs or mind altering substances are allowed in AREA 252. Alcohol Consumption before or while operating a motorized vehicle is not permitted.

No firearms, no hunting, no concealed weapons, or explosives of any kind is allowed in AREA 252.

AREA 252, or any person or entity associated with AREA 252 is neither liable nor responsible for damage, loss, or theft of personal property or injury.

No Trail Blazing is allowed. Stay on designated trails. Do not enter areas marked Private Property The terrain is constantly changing. Check each hill. Ride all trails with caution. Do not block any trail at any time except for emergencies or maintenance. Nonoperative vehicles should be moved to the side of the trails and attended to immediately. Mug Bogging allowed only on designated Trail #9 area only. Uphill riders shall always have first right-of-passage if possible.

Racing is not allowed. No excessive speed or reckless driving is allowed. No fighting allowed, regardless of fault or incident all parties, will be asked to leave AREA 252 for 48 hour cooling off period. All vehicles must operate in a manner to avoid incidents and/or accidents while in Area 252.

Camp fires allowed in designated areas only. No large fires – only downed wood/dead wood may be used for small camp fires. Leave no fires burning or smoldering. Fully extinguished campfires prior to leaving camping areas. Shelter and picnic tables will be available first come first serve. Riding through campground area permissible by executing a Lodging Agreement. No glass bottles or containers allowed. All vehicles must have front and rear lights while driving at night. The removal of any plants, rocks, trees, wildlife or otherwise is prohibited. Absolutely no littering. Pack it in – Pack it out. Do not damage any crops in AREA 252. Do not disturb wildlife.

Currently there are only two permissible locations to ride ATVs in the KY Great River Road Trails found in Carlisle County along the Mississippi River. 

Found only on the permissible road in Carlisle County as listed below or at the Wright’s Area 252 Riding Park.

1.      RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK. KNOW YOUR LIMITS.

2.      Carlisle County River Trail riders should follow safety practices recommended by the AMA ASI, including wearing heavy shoes, protective clothing, shatterproof eyewear, and helmets.

3.      Use caution while unloading and while riding on or near designated parking areas.

4.      Parking strictly prohibited anywhere except designated parking areas.

5.      Trails are two-way traffic. For safety, drive with headlights on.

6.      Hunting and other activities also occur in the Carlisle County River Bottoms. Be aware and courteous to other users on and off the trail at all times.

7.      All users under 21 years of age are required to wear DOT-approved motorcycle safety helmets while vehicles are in operation, except in vehicles with a fully enclosed metal cab or roll bar protection and seatbelts.

8.      Mud bogging and the creation of new trails is strictly prohibited.

9.      STAY ON DESIGNATED TRAILS; IF A TRAIL IS NOT SIGNED IT IS NOT A LEGAL TRAIL, subject to fines. 

10.  All riders must sign a waiver of liability and receive a map of the River Trails.

11.  Anyone under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature to ride.

12.  Direct parental or adult supervision is required for all persons under the age of 18 years’ operating on the River Trails.

13.  Litter laws are strictly enforced throughout the River Trails System.

14.  ALL KENTUCKY STATE LAWS SUPERSEDE these rules as if incorporated herein.

  3. All users under the age of 18 must have permission from a parent or legal guardian. Parent or legal guardian must sign a release of liability in the presence of a staff member and must accompany the minor at all times. No one under the age of 6 is permitted.
  4. The terrain is constantly changing. Ride all trails with CAUTION. When at all possible the uphill rider shall be give the “right of way”. DO NOT BLOCK any trail at any time, except during emergencies. Non operative vehicles should be moved to the side of the trails and attended to immediately.
  5. No trail blazing. Stay on designated trails and obey all signs. Do not enter areas marked as Private Property. Do not damage crops on AREA 252.
  6. Racing, excessive speed, and reckless driving are all strictly prohibited. Be considerate of other riders at all times.
  7. Mud bogging is only allowed on Trail #13 in the designated area.
  8. Litter laws are enforced!!! If you pack it in, pack it out.
  9. No firearms, concealed weapons, or explosives of any kind are allowed on premises.
  10. The removal of any plants, rocks, trees, wildlife, or otherwise is prohibited.
  11. No glass bottles or containers. Alcohol is prohibited.
  12. Camp fires are only allowed in designated areas. No large fires-only downed wood/dead wood may be used for small camp fires. Leave no fires burning or smoldering. Always make sure fire is completely extinguished before leaving.
  13. AREA 252 or any person or entity associated with it, is neither liable nor responsible for damage, loss, or theft of personal property or injury. All decisions by management are final.
  14. A person under the age of sixteen (16) years shall not operate an all-terrain vehicle with an engine size exceeding ninety (90) cubic centimeters displacement, and a person under the age of 16 shall not operate an all-terrain vehicle except under direct parental supervision. A person under the age of sixteen (16) years, when operating or riding as a passenger on an all-terrain vehicle, shall wear DOT approved protective headgear.
  15. A person under the age of twelve (12) years shall not operate an all-terrain vehicle with an engine size exceeding seventy (70) cubic centimeters displacement.
