February 16, 2013, Annual Duck Banding and Greenwing, Ballard County Ducks Unlimited Chapter, Held Annually at the Ballard Wildlife Management Area for a Greenwing member who is someone age 17 or younger. Greenwings received a Ballard County Greenwings T-shirt, were able to participate in outdoors events supervised by volunteers with hamburgers and hot dogs served at the end of the event.

April 20, 2013,   9:00 a.m., Civil War Trust Park Clean Up Day, Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, Columbus, KY  42032, History Buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with Civil War Trust, to help clean and restore America’s priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines.  The nationwide effort –dubbed Park Day – is underwritten with a grant from History Channel and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. Over 100 sites in 25 states are expected to take part in the effort with activities ranging from trash removal to trail building or planting flowers.  In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts, lunch, and a museum tour. June 8, 2013 – Come Join Us on Saturday for Family Fun Archaeology Day and Discover Wickliffe, KY!

Family friendly activities will be presented for kids of all ages to experience archaeology, primitive technology, the natural environment, the Mississippian Indian culture and outdoor opportunities during the Family Fun Archaeology Day at Wickliffe Mounds.

There will be hands-on demonstrations of pottery, primitive technology, flintknapping, atlatls and spears, bows and arrows, stone tools, crafts, storytelling, Native American games, simulated excavation and archaeology for a kids’ eye view.

COMPASS—Ballard County’s Healthy Direction Health Coalition and Cooperative Extension will have a Plate It Up! Exhibit. Fruits & Vegetables and Beverage samples will be available. Physical activity promotional items will also be given away.

Visitors can tour the archaeological site and Mississippian Lifeways museum, browse the gift shop in the welcome center and explore the mounds of the Mississippian Indian culture.

The City of Wickliffe will have vendors set up around town with crafts, foods and more. Other places to visit are the Kentucky Veteran and Patriot Museum, City Park, Fort Jefferson Memorial Cross and Park and the Great River Road National Scenic Byway.

May 18 & 19, 2013/ 9:am-5:pm – Bow Building Workshop at Wickliffe Mounds, Participants will have expert instruction on building an Eastern woodlands style long bow out of hickory staves. Tools and supplies will be provided, but you may bring your own hand tools to use for constructing the bow if you prefer. This is a two-day workshop and overnight camping is available. Participants must bring your own tent and camping gear. This class is limited and advance reservation is required. Workshop fee: $100 (includes campout). Photos from May 18 & 19, 2013 Bow Building Workshop at Wickliffe Mounds, Wickliffe, Kentucky- Participants were instructed on the art and craft of bow making by program specialist, Roger Moredock.  Eastern Woodland style long bows were made of hickory staves and a few opted for osage orange.  The participants used hatchets, draw knives, shaving horses and rasps to chisel away at the wood to make the shape of the bow.  A bow string and one arrow was provided to each person attending the workshop.  Everyone enjoyed the workshop and had a great experience.  We thank Roger Moredock and Chris Mayfield for their great instruction and Teresa Moredock for the wonderful photos. – Carla Hildebrand, Park manager, Wickliffe Mounds.

National Barrel Horse Association “#1 in Barrel Racing”.  The National Barrel Horse Association, headquartered in Augusta, Georgia, is the largest barrel racing organization in the world. In 1992, the NBHA revolutionized the barrel racing industry by pioneering the divisional format, which allows riders of all skill levels a chance to win money and prizes in barrel racing competition.

Divisional barrel racing, using the 4D format, is the heart of NBHA. Museum dedicated to men and women everywhere in honor of those who served in wars in defense of liberty and our country – the United States of America.  Focusing on war, giving visitors a chance to explore and discover artifacts, photography, art and narratives.  One such piece is a painting of the “Cool Fool”, an airplane manned by the Tuskegee Airman who ushered Ballard County native Dan Price to safety.  Engraves bricks may be purchased for $50.00 to adorn the front walk leaving your name or inscribing in memory or honor of another, or use it as an opportunity to leave a personalized message and to show support for any organization.
